With the Fourth Industrial Revolution upon us, a transformation is taking place. In order to keep up with the trends, we need to be prepared. We’ve already spoken about how the tech industry is pushing everyone to learn how to code. Kids especially are being taught to code from a very young age. By learning to code at such a young age, kids are able to innovate, think of new ways to apply logical thinking and also improve their communication skills. This is what LearnWare is aiming to achieve.
What is LearnWare?
LearnWare is an organization whose aim is to empower the next generation of problem solvers. The organization was the brainchild of Nimeshanan Kulendra and his wife Kajani Jayaseelan.
Having obtained his Bachelors Degree and Masters, Nimeshanan joined Pyxle as a software developer and then moved on to Blue Ocean Group. From there, he held the position of CIO for 9 years. During this time, Nimeshanan wanted to do away with the myth that technology is not available for everyone.
As a result, he came up with a concept to teach kids to code using a number of programs. He and his wife co-founded LearnWare to teach computer science to kids. As such, LearnWare aims to not only train the next generation of coders but also create future leaders in the areas of engineering, science, and robotics as well.
The LearnWare Academy, located in Colombo consists of a Makerspace for children to learn and experiment with technology. Their programs consist of Little Coders, Code Juniors, Code Engineers and Code Masters. The programs are aimed at those aged 5+, 8+, 10+ and 12+ respectively.
Little Coders are taught to code with Scratch and Blocks. In case you didn’t know Scratch is a block-based visual programming language targeted mainly at children. Code Juniors are taught the fundamentals of coding with Scratch and the MIT App Inventor. More advanced programs such as Code Engineers and Code Masters make use of Micro:bit and even Python, CSS, HTML and JavaScript respectively.
Creating Awareness of the possibilities with Coding
Here’s where things get interesting. The LearnWare Tech Camps will be held on the 20th and 21st of April 2019 at the Center Atrium of the Colombo City Center. Scheduled to be held from 3.00pm to 7.00pm, the LearnWare Tech Camp is a good place to start if you are interested in getting your kid involved in computer science.
As such, the LearnWare Tech Camp would give participants the chance to learn computer programming, coding and robotics and experiment with technology to learn new methods to solving problems. In addition, participants would also be able to take part in tech-based games and even stand a chance to win some cool giveaways as well.
It’s not only for the kids though
The LearnWare Tech Camp has something for everyone. This includes the parents as well. Parents would be able to take part in a number of workshops. These include how to keep your kids safe online, learning how to develop problem-solving skills in your kids.
It would also give parents the chance to see what careers their kids can have and understand how career choices can be influenced by their kids’ minds. The workshops would be conducted by Gnanasekaraiyer Balachandran – Group Cybersecurity Officer at Dialog Axiata PLC. Following the workshops, he would also be available for around an hour if you have any questions you have.
How do I be a part of the LearnWare Tech Camp?
That’s the best part. The LearnWare Tech Camp is open to anyone. So there’s no registrations or tickets required. Just head over to the Colombo City Centre and head to the Center Atrium.
