In the previous episode of the LSEG Tech Talks series, we got an introduction to how machine learning is utilised in the world of financial markets. The next episode of the series titled De-Risking the Risk with Machine Learning and GPUs dives even further to explore how machine learning paired with GPUs can help reduce financial risk. But as with the previous session, there will be lessons applicable to other domains as well on the application of the two technologies.
The powerful combination of GPU’s and machine learning
Conducting the session will be Head of Hardware Accelerated Systems at LSEG Sri Lanka, Thayaparan Sripavan and Associate Architect, Accelerated Systems at LSEG Sri Lanka, Janaka Perera. Speaking to Arteculate, Janaka highlighted the power of GPUs when it comes to machine learning saying, “Most models require vast amounts of training data. Because GPUs are powerful, they help us greatly reduce the time to process all of this data for training.”
By reducing the time needed to train the data, it enables us to not only reduce the cost but also accelerate the development process of machine learning models. For those individuals in the finance industry, such models are a powerful tool. As Thayaparan explains, “By utilising machine learning models to calculate risk, we’re empowering individuals with high-quality data to make informed decisions.”
Machine learning models much like many other forms of Artificial Intelligence are still relatively young. Such technologies are continuously evolving and overcoming challenges in the real world. One such challenge that the duo pointed out is the issue of bias, where AI exacerbates existing biases caused by human behaviour. Yet, here too we are seeing that the increased development speeds offered by the adoption of GPU’s help developers quickly overcome such issues to offer fair solutions to problems that benefit all.
