Cutting Edge by the Informatics Institute of Technology is the primary exhibition where students can showcase their projects both to their own peers and to a judging panel and even investors. Cutting Edge 2019 took place on the 28th of June 2019 at the premises of IIT. We took had a look for ourselves and made a list of the interesting ideas we saw at Cutting Edge 2019. Here they are.
Apay bila
The first interesting project we saw at Cutting Edge 2019 was Apey Bila. This is a bill splitting and bill tracking app. It uses OCR technology to capture your bills and track your expenses. The app is currently limited to the restaurant industry. Its available in all three languages.
Park-er
This is an app and IoT device to help you find a parking spot. This is designed to operate inside private car parks like apartments and office buildings. It works by having an IoT device monitoring the parking spot. You can reserve the parking spot for a time period through the app. If the IoT device detects a vehicle it sends a notification to you to check if you’re in the spot. If you’re not in the spot, If not then it sounds an alarm.
FieldR Cricket Fielding Analyzer
This is aimed at cricket coaches, players and analyzers. It offers real-time analytics of the player’s performance. We’ve seen such projects at an international level and are video based. Further getting such systems locally can be expensive. This is a club and school focused system and it’s cheaper because its IoT based with cheap fitness bands.
Sinhala Toxic Language Classifier
An interesting app we found at Cutting Edge 2019, this was a system aimed at tackling hate speech in Sinhala. We’ve already explored why this is such a challenge for tech giants like Facebook. So it was promising to see even some basic research into this topic.
The system we saw took Sinhala text and then classified it based on multiple labels since a text can be both racist and sexist as an example. Currently it doesn’t do anything more than classifying speech but it’s a start because that’s the main challenge.
Speakopedia
This is an application that aims to help kids with speech stuttering seeking therapy. Currently, most kids seeking therapy for stuttering see their therapists only once a month. In that time, they’re also asked to work on some activities with their parents but this is easier said than done. The therapists by monitor the emotional state of the kid and calculate how many words they shuttered.
The system does the same with its activities. These take the form of videos with text for the kids to speak. This is then recorded and then analyzed by the system along with a video that also recorded to calculate their emotional state and their stutter rate. Additionally, the system also allows therapists to view the progress of the kids and manage their appointments.
Heated Drive
A novel idea we found at Cutting Edge 2019, Heated Drive is an app that wants to help you drive better. It also takes a funny approach to do so. The app tracks the speed of the vehicle and will generate an alarm if the vehicle is going over the speed limit.
The interesting part is the alarm. It’s actually a pre-recorded voice of someone screaming at you to slow down. Additional voice packs are available and you can even submit your own voice pack as well. The app is available on a subscription model aimed at personal users, families, and businesses.
Easy Cheque
This was a system that aimed to digitize and tackle fraud and inconveniences dealing with cheques. It makes use of QR codes to digitize cheques along with Blockchain for security. The idea is to send cheques digitally. The team said they pitched the idea at a hackathon and HNB was interested.
Cerberex
This was an IoT project which promised an EEG scanner that will be used to scan your brainwaves and allows you to control a music player. All without ever touching your phone. A bold claim but still a work in progress as the team shared it isn’t able to work on everyone just yet. So best take it with a pinch of salt for now.
Step wise
This is an app aimed at helping students find a job in the tech industry. It works by first asking students what kind of job they would like. Afterwards, it then gives them a path to get the job. This refers to helping them know what languages, frameworks, and other technologies they’d need to learn.
The app also analyzes what technologies and job roles are trending to help students make a decision. Though the team admitted that currently, they’re getting job data from a website in the UK as it wasn’t possible to get the data from local websites. They’re hopeful that they’ll get access to APIs from local websites in the future.
Actively
Another interesting product we saw at Cutting Edge 2019 is an app we saw that aimed to help patients suffering or at risk of osteoarthritis. It does so by giving patients a customized exercise regime. This is created based on a knowledge base and rule-based system created with the support of physiotherapists. The system creates customized plans based on weight, height, and other variables.

At the end of the day’s proceedings, we also got to see which projects were awarded for their hard work and endeavors.
